Automated After-Hours Security Lighting for High Streets

Protecting inventory while complying with local authority dark-sky regulations and slashing overnight energy consumption.

When the store closes, the lighting requirements flip from merchandising to security. Attaining Retail Compliance after hours means balancing the need to deter theft with the legal requirement to reduce carbon emissions and light pollution.

The "Window Shopping" Evening Scene

From closing time until roughly midnight, DALI lighting controls should trigger an "Evening Scene," where the main shop floor goes dark, but the window displays remain illuminated to capitalize on passing evening footfall.

Restaurants, cinemas, and bars keep high streets busy long after retail stores have closed. To capture this audience, the window displays must remain lit. However, the store interior should be turned off. This creates massive contrast, making the window display pop spectacularly while significantly reducing the store's overall energy consumption during the evening hours.

Overnight Security Illumination (50 Lux)

After midnight, the entire store (including windows) should dim down to a baseline security level (typically 50 Lux) to allow CCTV cameras to capture clear footage without wasting energy.

Leaving a retail store blazing at 1000 Lux at 3:00 AM is a catastrophic waste of money and violates corporate ESG targets. However, the store cannot be pitch black, or the infrared CCTV cameras will only capture grainy, unusable footage if a break-in occurs. A programmed DALI system automatically dims a few select interior downlights to 10% output. This provides just enough ambient light (50 Lux) for high-definition color CCTV recording while slashing overnight energy use by 95%.

PIR Integration for Intruder Deterrence

The overnight lighting system should be linked to the store's intruder alarm PIR sensors. If motion is detected at 2:00 AM, the entire store lighting instantly blasts to 100%.

There is no greater deterrent to a burglar than being suddenly bathed in blinding 1000 Lux retail lighting. If an intruder breaks the glass or forces the door, the alarm system triggers the DALI router. Every light in the store instantly switches to maximum output. This immediately exposes the intruders to the street outside, ensures perfect CCTV footage, and almost always causes the burglars to flee the premises instantly.
